Bhuj

On January 26, 2001 an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the richter scale rocked the land of rich, diverse art and craft traditions of the Kutch district Gujarat, killing at least 30,000 people outside its capital, Bhuj making it a global calamity. Six years later, Bhuj was back donning a brand new look with an excellent state of the art infrastructure and the life of the artisans witnessing a drastic change post the earthquake. The artisans are of pastoral nomadic, semi nomadic tribe located around the borders and are skilled at the traditional handicrafts and other textiles.
